How to Take Care of Your Aging Cat - Looking after your elderly cat's regular needs

1. Pay attention to your cat's changing habits. An older cat might not like the food it used to have, it may not even want to eat at all. It might lose a little weight too, but if it loses a lot of weight, contact your veterinarian immediately.

2. Change the cat's food to a cat food formulated especially for elderly cats. However, ask your vet first, for advice on the right food type.
- Feed your cat soft food. As cats get older, their teeth can become weaker. When the older cat crunches down on its hard kibble, it might crack or lose its tooth, which could cause serious pain to your kitty, so always try to use soft food!

3. Leave a water bowl out. Older cats need more water and can become dehydrated easily. Be sure to leave a water bowl out. In the summer, use a narrow, deep bowl and put it in the shade. If you want to, you can also put some ice in it too.

4. Groom the kitty. Older cats may or may not groom themselves, so be sure to sometimes groom them yourself. Watch out for matted fur!!

5. Keep the cat warm. Elderly cats can be the most cuddly of all, really craving the warmth of a human body at night, especially if they are thin. If you don't want your cat to sleep with you, you can provide a heating pad if it's well-padded to keep it from being too hot, and to protect it well from cat claws.
